What is Acne?

Acne is much more than just pimples. It is an inflammatory condition of the skin where the hair follicles, which are the tiny holes in your skin, become clogged with excess sebum and dead skin cells. The specific skin cells that line your hair follicles are known as keratinocytes. Dr.  Heller and his team serving the residents of Daytona Beach, FL, suffering from acne and other skin conditions, would like you to know that there are six types of acne, including:

Whiteheads

Whiteheads are clogged hair follicles that produce a white bump beneath the skin. Clogged follicles that are whiteheads are also referred to as closed comedones.

Blackheads

Blackheads are clogged hair follicles where the sebum turns black when exposed to air and does not contain dirt. Blackheads are called open comedones because the hair follicle is open at the surface.

Papules

Papules are tender, raised, pink spots on the skin that look like little bumps. These are referred to as inflamed lesions. Lesions are when your skin appears abnormal in certain areas, and there are many types of lesions on the skin, from moles to birthmarks and acne.

Pustules or Pimples

Pustules or pimples are what most of us associate with teenage acne. These are raised bumps with yellow-white pus-filled tips and a red, inflamed base. Papules, pustules, nodules and cystic acne occur when ordinarily harmless bacteria on the skin infect the blocked pores or follicles.

Nodules

Nodules are a painful type of acne that presents as large, hard, solid bumps deep beneath the skin and, left untreated, may develop into cystic acne.

Cystic acne

Cystic or severe nodular acne is the worst form of acne. These are large, pus-filled lesions beneath the skin that are painful. When you have cystic acne, it is in your interest to consult a dermatologist as over-the-counter medications are unlikely to clear it up.
