Skin cancer is a dangerous condition that can be prevented with proper sun protection and a regular skin evaluation routine. While sun skin cancerprotection is important, sunscreen alone is not enough to prevent skin cancer. Dr. Jeffrey Heller in Daytona Beach, FL, offers these helpful tips to increase your chances of preventing skin cancer.

Prevention Tips

It is best to stay out of the sun during the most dangerous times between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you must be in the sun, cover up as much as possible with a hat, UV-blocking sunglasses and other protective clothing. Always wear a UVA/UVB sunscreen with at least SPF 15. For those that will be in the sun for a long time, use SPF 30 and re-apply every two hours or immediately after sweating or swimming. Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before being in the sun.

In terms of home prevention, take time to examine your skin monthly from head to toe and note any changes. Your professional Daytona Beach dermatologist also should evaluate you annually for a full body exam.

Warning Signs of Skin Cancer

As with anything, the sooner something is found, the easier it is to treat. This means that getting to know your skin and understanding the changes with it is the most important step toward skin cancer prevention.

Here are some things to look out for:

  • Changes in the shape of mole
  • Changes in the size of mole
  • If pus or discharge is present
  • Does the spot hurt?
  • Is the area dry or scaly?
  • Do I have raised red patches that might itch?
  • Do my growths have raised edges?
  • Do I have open sores that won’t heal?
