How Do I Prevent Acne?

Find out how to reduce the number of acne breakouts you experience.

Acne is a common nuisance many people have to deal with. But no one wants to deal with a breakout right before a big event, meeting, job interview, or date. Don’t let your schedule be dictated by acne. From the office of your Daytona Beach, FL dermatologist, Dr. Jeffrey AcneHeller, find out the best ways to keep acne at bay.

Keep Skin Clean

It should go without saying, but it’s important that you wash your face twice a day to remove dead skin cells, excess oil, and other germs from the surface of your skin. However, it’s not necessary to wash more than twice a day, as washing too often can actually dry out skin and exacerbate your acne.

When you do wash your face be sure to use warm water rather than hot and find a cleanser that is gentle on your acne-prone skin. Have questions about what cleanser to use? No problem! Our acne experts in Daytona Beach can help.

Moisture is Key

If you are using any topical acne medications or acne-targeting skincare products, you know all too well that they tend to dry out your skin. So, it’s important that you keep skin moisturized to prevent skin peeling and dryness. Only use moisturizers that have noncomedogenic on their labels, as these products should not cause acne.

Be Careful When Wearing Makeup

If you are already dealing with a breakout, the last thing you want to do is make it worse. Therefore, it’s best to use little to no makeup over acne whenever possible. Foundation and blush may look great when you first apply them, but their oils can leave acne-prone skin even worse by the end of the day. If you must wear makeup, opt for ones that are noncomedogenic.

Consider Your Hair Products, Too!

Did you know that what you put on your hair could also affect your skin? Hair gels, sprays, oils, and perfumes can easily get in contact with your face, clogging pores and irritating skin. When it comes to hair products, use gentle cleansing products. If you have oily hair, make sure you wash it more often to prevent breakouts. Have long hair? Make sure to pull it up and out of your face.
